Character Corner — Fairness
Mr. Weitzman, Social Worker

The Pillar of Character that we will focus on for May and June is “Fairness.”  Fairness is playing by the same rules as others; taking turns; sharing materials with the group; and going to the end of the line when lining up.  We will wear orange on
June 3rd for fairness.

Reading News...
Mrs. Infante, Mrs. Knapp, Mrs. Olimpieri

We can hardly believe that another year is coming to an end! We hope you all have a wonderful and well deserved vacation and you spend your time with your family and friends. It is so essential that you keep reading throughout the summer. Reading will help to strengthen your vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. You can read wherever you are, at home, the beach, in the car or away on vacation. Be sure to take a look at the summer reading list to find the fantastic books you can choose from. Your summer FREE calendar should be filled out over July and August. You cannot earn a prize at the end of the year if you do not turn in your summer calendars.  The governor’s reading challenge should be arriving soon, so keep an eye out for that information as well. Another suggestion to keep up your skills throughout the summer is to write a journal and fill it with all the exciting activities and places you visit. Your teacher for next year would love to see what you have written! If parents are looking for a great reading or math review you can go to summerskills.com to see some well written workbooks to purchase. These books have been used in the past by many and are aligned with the state standards.

Some further suggestions:

  • READ everywhere!
  • Discuss the books with your child
  • Ask questions such as; If you were the character would you have done the same thing? Why do you think the author wrote this story? Describe some of the character traits; honest, caring, brave, helpful, etc.
  • Fill out the FREE calendar and governor’s reading challenge (the same book can be used in both places!)
  • Keep a journal or reading log
  • Visit the library
  • Choose books that interest you
  • HAVE FUN!

We look forward to seeing you at the end of August for a great 2011-2012 school year!

From the Library…
Mrs. Albro

I want to take this opportunity to thank all my volunteers. I have adults who come in every week to help shelve and check out books. I also have “behind the scenes” people who repair books (thanks Mrs. Nigro) and change my bulletin board (Mrs. Bodington and Mrs. Hazen). There are also fifth grade volunteers who come at dismissal to help with different projects. All these volunteers add to the success of our Library Media Center. Thank you!

Please encourage your children to continue reading over the summer vacation. I highly recommend audio books for road trips. Trumbull Library has an extensive collection and this is an excellent way to improve your child’s vocabulary
and fluency as well as making the trip more pleasant.

Have a wonderful, relaxing summer!
