Trumbull Youth Mentoring Effort (TYME)
At Frenchtown Elementary School

Trumbull Youth Mentoring Effort (TYME) is a new intergenerational mentoring program at Frenchtown Elementary School that pairs senior citizens with elementary students in grades 1-5. Our goal is to establish a safe and caring environment where mentors provide students with one-on-one time and attention in the school, typically once a week during the academic year. Teachers identify children who can benefit most from interaction with a caring adult. As their friendships evolve, mentors and children discover ways to make school and learning fun. The program is free and open to any student that is in need of extra help.

Benefits

Children benefit from increased self-esteem, knowledge and skills. By spending time in a positive relationship with a senior citizen, the younger generation gains a better understanding of the process of aging. They also find older adults to be supportive role models, which leads to an all-around increase in the student’s motivation to learn, and leadership and communication skills.

Research findings PROVE that mentoring programs are successful. Just a few of the positive impacts are for those participating in mentoring programs:

  • Improvements in peer relations and social skills
  • Improved classroom behavior and overall school attitude
  • A combined reduction in fighting and other disciplinary incidents
  • Reported improved parent and peer relationships (this was especially true among boys)
