TAG/Enrichment News!

Frenchtown has a very enthusiastic group of participants in TAG this year. The fifth grade students are: Nigel Hayes, Nicholas Marinos, and Carmen Phan. They have been working on a Service Learning Project of their choice. Nick and Carmen have been focusing on hunger in Connecticut. Nigel, along with a Middlebrook student, has been working on the needs of the street children of Mozambique, Africa. The students have done research, synthesized the information, formulated interview questions, interviewed a person connected to their cause, and formulated an Action Plan in order make a direct impact on the need. There will be an EXPO night where all TAG projects will be presented at Frenchtown School on Monday, February 13 from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. All are invited!

TAG fourth grade students have been engaged with independent projects as well. They have learned how to create a PowerPoint Presentation. Sophia Zhang researched the sport of Figure Skating. Marius Siscar was interested in studying Caecilians. Mina Song chose as her topic Greek Gods and Goddesses. Lastly, Nicholas Siwanowicz studied Asteroids. The group used the Independent Investigative Method (IIM) as their research tool. PowerPoint Presentations will be shown in their respective classrooms. The group is looking forward to sharing their new findings!

On the Enrichment front, fifth grade students have been writing poetry inspired by the works of famous poet Shel Silverstein. Each participant will choose two poems to be published in a booklet. In addition, Enrichment students have been “straining their brains” with a type of brainteaser called “Commonyms”. A group of three words are given and the students must figure out how the three are associated. It can be very challenging, and most times they rise to the challenge!

It has been my pleasure to work with the TAG/Enrichment groups. The kids are awesome! They are full of spirit, enthusiasm, and talent. I look forward to working with the TAG students, and fourth grade Enrichment students for the remainder of the year!

Thank you.
